Mothers who homeschool their children face their own daily stressors, from trying to be the perfect teacher to feeling unprepared. Homeschool moms face incredible doubt and criticism, but also elation when their child masters a subject or surpasses test scores. To continue giving all they do, they need self-care for moms.

Tips for Self-Care for Moms Who Homeschool

Self-care for moms is not a selfish endeavor, nor does it need to be expensive. It’s not necessary to take you away from your family for days at a time to come back recharged and ready to go. Little moments can be enough to silence stress hormones and release chemicals that leave you feeling accomplished, confident, and happy.

Start the Day with Morning Baskets

A morning basket is a quiet way to start the homeschool day. Consider creating a morning basket for your children and one for yourself. Or make a basket for each of your children. Treat your basket as a self-care device. In your basket, include books and activities you can do quietly to set the tone for the day. Maybe include a devotional for a Bible reading plan and your Bible, another book you’ve been wanting to read, and a puzzle book.

Keep Flexible Routines

Routines are great for structure, and children need structure to feel safe and secure. But keep your routines flexible. Life happens, and there will be times when you need to gauge the day by everyone’s energy level.

When that happens, try not to be upset; instead, adjust your schedule based on where your child is. Do they need a lighter day today because they were overstimulated over the weekend by the family get-together? Meet them where they are and trust that you are more than capable.

Add in Games You Can Do Together

Children love games. Find games you can do together as a family. Homeschool isn’t all about pencil and paper. It’s about discovering new things, working together as a team, learning how to be a gracious winner (and loser), and how being with family can be some of the greatest self-care of all. Choose educational games appropriate for your child’s grade level, like spelling or vocabulary words or math facts, and play together or make up your own.

Pursue Your Own Interests or Hobbies

You might teach your homeschool on interest-led topics, but do you lead your life that way? When we get busy, our own hobbies and pursuits fall to the sidelines. Self-care for moms includes spending a bit of time doing what makes your heart happy. Make a list of your hobbies and interests. Next, choose one or two to look into over the next six months. Do a little every day toward those goals.

Schedule Rest

Schoolwork and life skills are important, but so is rest. Everyone needs time and space to regroup and recharge. For little children, this could be a nap. For older children, a quiet time for independent reading. For homeschool moms, this could be time to read, take a coffee break, watch an episode of a show, or work out. Rest is what you make of it. What do your mind and body need right now?

Seek Counseling for Chronic Stress

Chronic stress can make everything feel harder. Self-care for moms is only the beginning, one piece in a puzzle. Learning how to care for your mental and emotional health is necessary to continue to be the best version of yourself in this season of your life.
